Why Does Pain Persist Even When Imaging Is Normal?
Pain Isn’t a Damage Report... It’s a Decision from the nervous system to tell you to pay attention
Most people assume imaging tells the truth.
If the MRI is clean, the pain should be gone.
If the X-ray looks normal, movement should feel safe again.
And yet, this is one of the most common frustrations clients bring into our private practice.
Pain that doesn’t make sense.
Not sharp, not catastrophic, just persistent, lingering, and what could be interpreted as “protective” pain.
What most people don’t realize is that imaging shows structure, not interpretation.
Pain is not a direct readout of tissue condition.
It’s a decision made by the nervous system.
The nervous system weighs sensory input against memory, context, and perceived threat before producing pain. When safety is uncertain, pain remains, even when tissues look fine.
This is why reassurance given by a doctor alone doesn’t work.
And why “nothing is wrong” often makes people feel worse.
Pain doesn’t mean damage.
It means protection from the brain hasn’t been released yet.
